MICHELIN-STARRED CHEF VIKAS KHANNA AND GUPSHUP TEAM DEBUT NEW MODERN INDIAN RESTAURANT
Bungalow Opens In The Heart Of New York’s East Village On March 23rd
Michelin-starred culinary virtuoso, MasterChef India judge and author Chef Vikas Khanna and restaurateur Jimmy Rizvi of Bombay Hospitality Group that includes GupShup, Chote Miya and Ammi announced today the opening of their new restaurant, Bungalow, in New York City. Bungalow proudly preserves the rich heritage of Indian cuisine, where each dish reflects a blend of time-honored recipes and contemporary culinary techniques.
Chef Vikas Khanna, renowned for his elevated approach to Indian cuisine in the United States said, “The menu reflects the diversity of post-independence culinary influences, capturing the vibrant club culture that shaped modern India— we’re proud to serve regional favorites from the Kashmir Valley to the pepper estates of Tamil Nadu.”
“Bungalow is a celebration of the memories woven into the fabric of India’s sprawling country clubs. It’s a culinary journey that delves into my childhood, where we lived for the liminal moments and unforgettable, distinct regional flavors,” said Jimmy Rizvi, Bungalow’s Founder and CEO. He added, “The name of the restaurant references the single-storied houses built with European influences, which later became hotbeds of retro revelry and social gatherings among Indian aristocrats—birthing a sub-cuisine of their own.”
Signature dishes include Kiss of Kashmir (Lotus Roots, Kidney Beans, Pickled Turnips Walnut Raita, Pickled Turnips), Shrimp Balchao (Nigella Seeds Cones, Tamarind, Curry Leaves), Purple Sweet Potato Chaat (Green Mango Sauce, Yam Chip, Chickpea Droplets), Dahi Kabab (Kataifi, Purple Cabbage, Passion Fruit), Colors of Spring (Mixed Nuts Pudding, Pistachio Mousse, Hibiscus Powder, Sesame Brittle), Malai Chicken (Pomegranate Garlic Reduction, Watermelon Radish, Amul cheese).
The extensive and creative cocktail program features Chai Paani (clarified chai masala milk punch with toasted Parle-G crumble), Kaali Peeli (means black & yellow and is an ode to yellow cabs in Bombay and New York City - turmeric infused tequila with mango), and Holi Moli (a hot and spicy cocktail with Kashmiri Chili infused Mezcal Margherita to honor Holi and is a fun take on “holy moly”).
Bungalow’s design draws inspiration from the rich heritage of Indian aesthetics, specifically the opulence and elegance of vintage upscale living. This immersive experience transports guests to a realm where timeless Indian traditions meet contemporary luxury. Rich jewel tones such as amber, emerald, and ruby, combined with gentle pastel hues adorning the walls, are vital elements in the restaurant’s design, intricately intertwining the tale of bungalow life in India. Every color and texture is meticulously crafted, whether in brass, glass, or wood, to epitomize luxury, tradition, and sophistication. These bespoke elements enrich the guest experience with layers of cultural depth and visual allure.
Sameer Bhatt, Bungalow's General Manager and Partner, comes with experience from some of New York’s leading culinary institutions such as GupShup, Eleven Madison Park, and most recently, Le Pavillon.
